Everyone has a good time at Halloween and for costume parties when the dress up as fairies, even adults. A fairy is human yet somehow magical. It’s small but powerful, innocent yet sexy, and mischievous while being good natured. Sometimes fairies are a little ill-tempered. Fairies are a symbol of freedom and simplicity, magic and nature. When people wear fairy costumes they often feel mischievous, sexy, and cheerful, which is a combination that every party needs. It’s not surprising that fairy costumes are some of the most popular costumes purchased for Halloween.
The most well known fairy is the famous Tinkerbell of course. Tinkerbell is the well loved fairy from the Peter Pan books and movies produced by Walt Disney. Disney’s animation of Tinkerbell set the standard for Tinkerbells appearance for all time. She is well known for her short stature, long blond hair and a dress made from green leaves. There have been other versions of Tinkerbell seen in the media that didn’t resemble the one from Disney’s Peter Pan. In the movie Hook, a live-action sequel to Peter Pan, Tinkerbell was tall and short-haired redhead that was played by Julia Roberts. In the movie she wore a light brown leather shirt and shorts. The point is clear; anyone, regardless of skin color, hair color, weight, or height can be instantly recognized when wearing an adult Tinkerbell costume.
Either of these movie costumes can easily represent the two sides of Tinkerbell. Tinkerbell can be portrayed as the sexy, sweet, and helpful fairy that wears the green dress in Disney’s movie, or as the mischievous, energetic, and jealous Tinkerbell that Julie Roberts portrayed wearing brown shorts and shirt.
If you want to portray the jealous and mischievous fairy, choose an adult Tinkerbell costume that uses matte fabrics in dark colors. While the different shades of brown that were used in the Hook version of Tinkerbell is a great place to start, experimenting with shades of purple, red, dark green, blue, and black could produce great results. Choose fabrics that will absorb the light rather than reflecting it, like suede or velvet. Wear boots over dark or striped tights and use dark makeup. When looking for wings, choose butterfly shaped wings with color rather that the more traditional dragonfly wings that are usually pale. Don’t forget to play pranks on the other party goers!
If you want to portray the helpful, sweet, and sexy Tinkerbell, choose an adult Tinkerbell costume that incorporates a green leafy dress. You can choose any shade of green from light chartreuse and lime, to the darker shades of emerald and forest green. Don’t be afraid to mix shades of green. Choose fabrics that are shiny like satin, silk, or polyester. Trim the green dress with sequins, rhinestones, or glitter to give a shimmering effect. You can choose to go barefoot or wear a simple pair of ballet slippers in green or white.
If you want to wear the sexy adult Tinkerbell costume, start out with the helpful and sweet Disney style adult Tinkerbell costume and tweak it properly. Rather that wearing a knee-length and full skirt with scalloped edges, choose a form fitting, mid-thigh length skirt that with overlapping, separate green pieces of “leaf” that will reveal a flash of leg when it separates as you walk. Wear a sleeveless or even a strapless bodice that has a low neckline. You can finish the look with silver, green, or white high heeled shoes.
Since Tinkerbell was well known for the famous pixie dust that allowed anyone to fly that was sprinkled with it, pixie dust is a must for every adult Tinkerbell costume. A little bag full of glitter works perfectly for this. For people that don’t want to make a mess or fear running out of the special dust, a wand with silver or gold metallic streamers attached to the end will work as well.
Tinkerbell represents so many different things, so many different aspects of personality, that anyone can have a fun time playing Tinkerbell at a party. Costumes are available for any of her moods or images. Careful choices in the details of a costume can change the image from sweet to sexy to mischievous.
