Caring For Your Tuxedo

by Richard M. Gluto

Lets be honest, most of us buy a tuxedo because we have an imminent event to be present at, and once over, the suit will be cleaned (if required) and hung up in the closet. When you have purchased it, caring for your tuxedo should be high on the agenda.

When another need to wear your tuxedo arises, it will be taken out, worn, cleaned again if essential and hung up in the closet. Already you can see the pattern taking shape. Nothing other than this will happen to your tux and you believe nothing else is needed.

Unless you’re fortunate enough to wear your tuxedo often, you could pull it from it’s dark cavernous home to discover that moths have feasted it to threads.

It doesn’t take long for moths to do extensive damage to your clothes, especially a fine tuxedo. There are many items to repel moths and one of the most popular and inexpensive methods is to use cedar.

After laundering, your tuxedo must be hung so as not to wrinkle in any way. This means hanging in the right position, as it would be worn. Keep it out of any sunlight. If it’s likely that the sun could shine straight into where your suit is stored and it happens as a regular occurrence, you will find your suit to have visibly discolored in uncovered areas.

Always use a good travel bag when flying. These are zipped outer bags with a built in coat-hanger. The superior products permit your suit to be folded kindly for travel without creasing too much. Once at your destination, you should free your suit and permit it to hang naturally for as long as possible.

It’s always a good idea to ask for recommendations when searching for a service to professionally clean your tuxedo. Try to find an establishment that cleans garments ‘in-house’ as opposed to the many dry cleaners who often send their garments away to be laundered.

In that same vein, an on-site tailor is a great time saver when needed, even if only to alter a waistline. Age is unkind to most of us and an alteration here and there is highly recommended.
