The most important part of any diamond that you buy is the cut. It could have incredible clarity and color and still look absolutely awful if it was cut poorly. Even the most glorious diamond on earth-the Hope Diamond, would look terrible if someone were to cut it poorly. A quality cut on a diamond not only shows off its natural beauty but really add to it as well.
Diamond cuts have a few different parts. The widest part of a diamond once it has been cut is the area called the girdle. Bellow the girdle is an area which is called the pavilion and the area above the girdle is known as the crown. The very top of the crown is the table. The crown and table are the most visible areas of the diamond because the diamond is held in the setting by the girdle.
The table is arguably the most important part of the cut. It is the largest area on the stone and is also the primary entry point for the majority of the light passing through it. The way the table is cut is what gives the stone its sparkle.
One of the most famous types of cut is the table cut. This is when the table facet of the diamond has been cut so that it is either shaped like a square or a rectangle. In modern times this is considered a fairly rare cut.
The table cut was much more popular in older times. It is considered a traditional cut because it was in style during the sixteen and seventeen hundreds. Most of the diamond jewelry from this era have diamonds cut in this fashion.
Having a square table doesn’t necessarily mean a diamond has a square cut however. There are other cuts such as the bagguette cut or square cut which are based on the step cut. With this cut, the diamond’s pavilion area is cut into parallel edges in a way that is similar to the sides of a pyramid.
A table cut on the other hand has gently rounded face rather than steps on the pavilion. This gives the table cut a exceptional sparkle.
There are a lot more options other than the simple cuts of yesteryear today because of computer aided technology. Some of the cuts we are capable of today would be completely impossible for a jeweler with hand tools to pull of.
