The Changing Look Of Walking Shoes Because Of New Soles

The newest look in the walking shoes seem to be all the rage soles in the shoes that make it seem to roll your foot through a higher mid-point at the arch.

These shoes, originally called earth shoes because they emulate the action of walking barefoot in sand, are now being touted as a great way to shape up your legs and derriere, improve circulation and core muscles, and generally get more from walking.

Earth shoes weren’t too popular when it first came out decades ago because they looked like they were designed for someone with special needs. Even MBTs, invented in the 1970s and now one of the top-of-the-line shoes, weren’t in vogue until recently.

Costing upwards of $150, MBT’s, have been featured in magazines and have been credited for the added comfort for people with knee or lower back problems and for the ability to tone the legs and buns.

Other shoe brands are also catching on. Reebok and Skechers have been making claims that their debuting lines have soles that emulate barefoot walking in the sand. Skechers does it with a reverse incline and rounded sole similar to MBTs, while Reebok has a more traditional looking shoe with balance pods that allow air to travel underneath the sole of the foot and create the same effect.

Other options to the athletic shoes made by the three manufacturers and the lesser know names are also available. A line called Fit Flops produces both walking boots and a version of the ever-popular flip-flop that utilizes the same technology. While other makers produce lines of unisex shoes, knowing the benefits beyond better looking legs, Reebok’s lines lean towards women and MBT makes hiking boots and sandals as well.

If you decide to take advantage of any of these lines, expect to pay more than you might for your everyday shoe, although knockoff lines are also available at a reduced price.

Before spending all that money, be sure that you test the shoes, walk around as much as you can or find a store with a good return policy if you find them uncomfortable. Although balance may be an issue in some lines like MBT, especially if you are just getting started on them, the rolling action in most of the shoes are very comfortable.

Try to start out with shorter walks than you may be accustomed to taking. No matter what your fitness level is, this type of shoe will work your muscles in a new way and you may feel uncomfortable at first. Rest assured that over time you can achieve benefits with this type of sole, whether you see it in the mirror or feel it in your knees, back and core.
