Most households have some type of arrangement near the main entrance to their house, usually the front door, for storing residents’ and visitors’ coats. Some houses have a simple row of hooks in the hall, whereas others have a dedicated coat closet or cloakroom.

Furthermore, most of these spaces are fairly chaotic with coats heaped over other coats which are heaped on top of other coats that no-one has worn for years.

You ought to apply the same rules to organizing this area, let’s call it a cloakroom for easy reference, as you do to your bedroom closets or wardrobes. The trick is that everything must have a place and everything must be put in that place, which means that you and all the family or all the household have to understand the rules.

It simply does not make for a tidy cloakroom if some folk stick to the rules whilst others do what they want. Let’s take an average family or household of four as another norm. Four people like this will own a coat or two each, a jacket, perhaps an umbrella and a number of pairs of shoes and a pair of slippers maybe.

You could install a shoe rack so that each person can store, say, three pairs of shoes per person in the cloakroom. If your shoe rack has four levels then three pairs of shoes and a pair of slippers each. Everything else has to be kept either in the bedroom or the garage. Some footwear is seasonal, so this ought not be too much of a difficulty.

Likewise with coats and jackets. You could have a row of coat hooks around the walls of the cloakroom and allocate every member of the household a certain number of hooks. (Look out for the cloakroom hooks that have a top and bottom hook – two for the space of one).

Again, all non-seasonal coats to be stored in the bedroom. One more tip here, remember to allocate a row of hooks for visitors. Perhaps one of the small walls of a small cloakroom could be set apart for visitors.

A perfect cloakroom would have a shoe rack on the floor level or a bit higher, then a row of double coat hooks and then a shelf running around it. This shelf is important. People used to wear hats a great deal more than they do now, but some people still wear gloves, scarves and shawls that they would rather not hang on a hook and others like to ride a motorbike.

Never worry, you will always find something to put on a shelf in a cloakroom even if it is merely a tin of air freshener to spray around before friends arrive.

One more item that is frequently stored in cloakrooms that you ought to reserve space for is the vacuum cleaner. It is handy to have a vacuum cleaner in the hall to pick up the bits of mud and garbage that inevitably get carried or blown into the hall, but you will always have room for one in a well-organized cloakroom

Chains stored in a jewelry drawer or box usually manage to tangle or knot, meaning they must be freed before wearing. Pendants can get scratched by other pieces and settings, especially small ones, can be lost. A necklace tree can save you time while protecting your jewelry from damage.

Jewelry trees are available in a wide variety of materials. Among the least expensive are clear acrylic ones that let the jewelry be the focus. Some are fixed in position, but others spin to allow easy access to all pieces. Solid wood trees are also available and can be found in light or dark finishes. Metal trees are also plentiful, from economical pewter to more expensive sterling silver.

There are trees that are designed just for necklaces, but combination models are also available. In addition to necklaces, some styles will hold pierced and hoop earrings and others accommodate bracelets. Some have a bowl attached at the base to hold rings or other items. Spinner arms are common, while others are fixed. There are also styles that have rotating bases.

Designs range from simple geometric stands to intricate tree of life patterns. Other designs portray trees realistically, with leaves in place and a simulated bark finish. Futuristic or high tech designs can also be found that are twisted in intricate patterns and finished in gleaming metal.

Some designers use felt or even velvet to cover the trees for extra protection. This is most suitable for pieces that can be scratched or tangled easily. They provide an extra safeguard for pearls, heirloom items, or chains that are fine and delicate. If you just need to protect a few such items, you can buy felt pads that are back with adhesive to apply to your tree. You can find these online at craft supply dealers or locally at stores. You can also make your own from a piece of velvet or felt and then glue them where needed.

Take a look at what you need to hang before you purchase a tree. It is obvious that those without pierced ears do not need holes for studs or hoops. However, some overlook how long their favorite necklaces may be when they are shopping for a tree. The arms need to be placed at the proper height to keep pendants suspended. This means that if most of your necklaces are under 24 inches, a tree will need to be 12 inches or taller. Longer chains would have to be doubled to keep pendants from contacting the surface below and possibly being damaged.

Some styles have separate hooks or pegs for each individual necklace. Those that only have long arms may hold more, but normally will require you to remove multiple necklaces to reach the one you want. While the chains will be less likely to tangle than in a drawer or box, knotting can still occur.

Some people mount small shelves to display a necklace tree. When bedecked with your jewelry, it will become a unique decoration for your room. No matter where you choose to place it, it will add interest and protect your items simultaneously.

Have you read about the jewelry tree? Well, these unique style stands can be useful to keep your necklaces safe and non tangled. You are one step away from looking at some of the best designs of these necklace tree stands.

It is no wonder that the wire type closet organizers are the most popular among city dwellers. You can install them just about anywhere. They can be put into the narrowest of closet spaces as well as a large expanse of a walk in closet. The reason they are so popular is that they are versatile as well as durable. They are even strong enough to be used in garages, work spaces and heavyweight pantries. A wire closet organizer has a sturdy framework making it useful for many purposes.

You need to make sure that the type of organizer you use fits your particular needs. If you are in a metro rental and on a tight budget, the least expensive, and the least construction intrusive is the wire closet organizer. Visually appealing and strong, these closet organizers are simple to construct and pull apart, allowing you to remodel large closets in only a few hours time. Other types of organizer systems may require construction knowledge (and permission from your landlord). No mater what type of system you choose however, an organized closet is always better than a garish storage pile.

One big advantage of using wire is that it is much easier to cut down to size or reorganize than wooden counterparts. There is a lot more mess and effort invested in wooden shelving as opposed to using a wire closet organizer. Tons of accessories are available for wire organizers. You can easily add them onto your system later, or rotate them between several systems in your house.

They are easy to construct, it takes just a couple of hand tools to put one together and they look good when they are completed. Wire closet organizers can be installed in a very short amount of time which simplifies the process of creating storage. There is no heavy construction involved, anyone can put them together and this keeps landlords a lot happier.

If you are concerned about the wires leaving creases on your clothes, there is a simple remedy. Use shelf liners right on the wire shelves and you won’t have any problems with this. Most people use shelf paper on regular shelving so there is no reason why you shouldn’t use it here as well.

If you are a home owner, you first choice might be to install a traditional wooden closet organizer. However, if you think there may ever come a time when you would need to change your closet around or possibly even move to another closet, a wire closet organizer is probably the best choice for you too.
